Teden Mengi signs from Manchester United!

Teden Mengi, an England youth international, has left his boyhood club Manchester United to join the Hatters for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old centre-half joins Kenilworth Road as Rob Edwards’ 11th new signing of the summer, bolstering the club’s defensive options.

“Teden is someone we’ve been aware of for a long time – Richie Kyle worked with him at the FA in the England age groups,” Edwards added.

“He’s a fantastic age and brings a lot of experience for a young player.” He received an excellent schooling at Manchester United and will assist us in the outside centre-half position.

“He’s a fantastic athlete; he’s aggressive, good in one-on-ones, and knows how to use the ball.”

“However, when we spoke with him, he made it clear how much he wanted this and to be successful here.”

“He has a bright future, and we want him to have it.” There’s no immediate expectation on him to be the’main guy’ – but it’s great if he does, but there’s no escaping the fact that he’s here to compete.”

“I’d been at Manchester United since I was six and been there all my life; I’ve seen people come and go and I was the last of my age group to leave,” Mengi stated in his first interview. While it is difficult to leave United, it is an exciting time.

“I just had to be honest with myself and ask what was best for me.” Stay and fight for United, or move somewhere else and hunt for work. Finally, I was honest with myself and chose that option.

“Making Luton my home was a no-brainer, and the challenge of living outside of Manchester is something I’m looking forward to.”

“The team was doing well even before they were promoted.” I enjoy the way they play, and with five at the back, I think I’d fit right in. After chatting with the management, I believe I have an excellent chance of making an impression here.”

So far, the story

Teden, who was born in Manchester, joined United’s development system when he was seven years old and earned his first professional deal in 2019.

He debuted for their Under-21s in the Football League Trophy, appearing three times in 2019/20, and made his senior debut for the Red Devils as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League fixture against LASK in August 2020. Mengi was later utilized as a substitute in several UEFA Champions League and EFL Cup matches.

Teden’s first experience of first-team football came on loan at Derby in February 2021, where he appeared nine times under manager Wayne Rooney.

The following season, he went on loan to Birmingham, where he appeared nine times.

The talented defender has also represented England at youth levels, appearing at under-15, 16, 17, 18, and 20.

Teden, welcome to Kenilworth Road!
