Sunderland: Patrick Roberts’ newest acquisition and two more on the way

SOUTHAMPTON are thought to have acknowledged defeat in their deadline-day effort to recruit Patrick Roberts from Sunderland.

On Thursday night, Saints made an ambitious late approach for the former Manchester City forward, paying £3 million up front with an additional £2 million in guaranteed add-ons.

Roberts’ contract at Sunderland expires at the end of the season, but the Black Cats rejected Southampton’s offer because it was much below their valuation, according to Sky. Roberts currently appears to be staying at Sunderland past the 11 p.m. deadline.

And, after signing Mason Burstow and Nazariy Rusyn on deadline day, the Black Cats appear set to acquire two more players in the coming hours.

Sky has depicted Adil Aouchiche and Timothee Pembélé arriving at the Academy of Light together before their permanent relocation.

Aouchiche, a 21-year-old midfielder from Lorient, will join the club, while PSG’s Pembélé is a right-back. He appears to be in line to take over for Lynden Gooch, who is still likely to complete his move to Stoke City.

Ross Stewart’s move to Southampton is still likely to be completed before the deadline.

Danny Batth’s future is uncertain after a transfer to Cardiff fell through, and it is unclear whether Alex Pritchard will be moved at this time.
