Postecoglou explains £45m Tottenham decision after ‘exciting’ Johnson signs from Nottm Forest

Brennan Johnson has the support of Ange Postecoglou after completing a £45 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

Tottenham has been able to use some of the money Bayern Munich paid for Harry Kane to reinvest in the Wales international, who scored eight goals and provided three assists to help Nottingham Forest stay in the Premier League last season.

Johnson was not registered in time to feature in Saturday’s 5-2 thrashing of Burnley at Turf Moor, but his arrival should provide Ange Postecoglou with more options after his Tottenham side were inspired by Son Heung-min’s hat-trick and could have easily scored even more in an exciting attacking display.

He’s just another talented young athlete. He is a genuine threat in the front third, different from what we currently have, youthful, and ambitious, according to Postecoglou. It’s no secret that she serves as my role model.

“It’s about the person just as much as the footballer, and based on the way he looks, he will fit in incredibly well with this bunch. He has a lot of drive and ambition and wants to step up his performance.

With his technical and physical abilities, he should blend in perfectly.

For Tottenham, who spent more than £200 million to revamp the team in Postecoglou’s way, Johnson was the ninth acquisition of a busy transfer window.

However, the Australian claimed that it was just the beginning and that he still has more market research to conduct in upcoming windows.

“When you look at the team we have now, we virtually changed half the starting line up, the way we train, and the way we coach,” he claimed. “There was never going to be a single window rebuilt.”

Lyle Foster’s early goal had put Burnley ahead of Tottenham, but Son’s goal in the 16th minute pulled them even. From there, they mercilessly punished Burnley’s defensive errors as Cristian Romero scored twice in the first half’s last seconds and James Maddison added a third goal early in the second.

Josh Brownhill scored a consolation goal for the Clarets in stoppage time after Son had scored twice in four minutes shortly after the hour to complete his hat trick.

Burnley has now lost three games in a row at home to start its reintegration into the top division, giving up 11 goals in losses to Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Spurs.

Vincent Kompany will now use the international break to pick the bones out of what has gone wrong for his side, but remains bullish that their methods will come good.

“During my career I’ve not just been a good leader or captain because of the good times,” the four-time Premier League winner said.

“It is easy to be a good captain or leader then, it is at these times I feel most confident in what you need to do to get better. You need to analyse what needs to get better and decide what the next step is.

“We will do everything we can to avoid defeat but it is at these moments you learn most about your team’s character.”
