Newcastle United have suffered another defensive injury blow as Alex Murphy withdrew from international duty with Ireland under-21s over the weekend. The 19-year-old centre-back had been named for future games against Turkey and San Marino, but he has been replaced by Wigan’s Baba Adeeko.

Murphy suffered the injury against Manchester City under-21s on Saturday after impressing in Newcastle’s senior squad during pre-season. Following the injury to Sven Botman, Eddie Howe needs as many fit men in the heart of his defense as possible.

After limping out with an ankle injury against Liverpool six days earlier, the Dutchman missed Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Brighton. Botman was expected to appear at the Amex.

Newcastle United and Manchester United, according to Gary Neville, have both had ‘below standard’ openings to the current season. The Sky Sports analyst was asked to provide an early evaluation of the Premier League’s top clubs, with Manchester City sitting atop the table with a spotless record after four games.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and West Ham are all 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s team. Newcastle, on the other hand, started the season with a thrashing of Aston Villa before suffering three straight defeats.

The Magpies were barely defeated at City before falling to Liverpool at home despite possessing a numerical advantage for more than an hour. Due to Sven Botman’s injury, Eddie Howe had to make one forced change to his starting eleven at Brighton, but the visitors were poor and were defeated 3-1.
