Newcastle United have ‘entered the race’ to sign a former Tottenham Hotspur star, with Manchester United also ‘interested’.

Newcastle are rumored to be interested in signing one of last season’s top scorers.

Newcastle United have emerged as one of the frontrunners to re-sign a striker who spent three years with the club.

The Magpies presently have a strong frontline led by last season’s leading goal scorer Callum Wilson and club-record acquisition Alexander Isak.

However, they are now connected with a record-breaking deal to re-sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Toney joined Newcastle from Northampton Town in 2015. Under Steve McClaren’s management, the striker made only two substitute appearances and was loaned out to Barnsley (twice), Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United (twice), and Wigan Athletic.

The forward was unable to break into the first team, which included Dwight Gayle and Alexander Mitrovic at the time, and manager Rafael Benitez decided to trade Toney to Peterborough for about £1 million.

Toney has established himself as a prolific goalscorer since 2018, and he is now regarded as one of England’s most skilled strikers.

Toney had an outstanding 24 goals in 32 appearances during the 2019/20 season before being sidelined by Covid. He proceeded to excel at Brentford the following season, scoring 31 goals to propel the club to its first top-flight promotion in 74 years.

Toney has remained steady in the Premier League, scoring 12 goals in his first full season and an astonishing 20 goals last season.

The striker’s football career is temporarily on hold owing to gambling offenses, and he will be unable to return to the Brentford club until January 17, 2024.

According to FootballTransfers, his form in recent seasons has piqued the interest of some of the league’s biggest clubs, including Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are looking for a long-term striker capable of scoring 20 goals on a regular basis, according to football journalist Steve Kay. Callum Wilson is currently 31 years old, and his current contract expires at the conclusion of the season, thus the team may need to find a replacement shortly.

However, the Magpies could face competition from Tottenham, who are looking to replace Harry Kane, and Manchester United, who are still reeling from Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

The 27-year-old was ruled out of Brentford’s pre-season training, but he will be able to rejoin his teammates on September 17 as he prepares to return from his lengthy ban.
