Rangers news bulletin: Ronnie Edwards rules are set amid a price drop, and a Leeds United star deal is being ‘explored’
Edwards was on Ibrox’s radar during the summer, but interest might be renewed in the January transfer window.
Darragh MacAnthony, chairman of Peterborough United, has confirmed that Ronnie Edwards will go on the market in January, amid links with Rangers, and has accepted that a reduction in valuation is possible.
Posh’s young defender, who helped England win the under-19 European Championships last year, has been linked with a move to the Light Blues. Rangers have had scouts at many of their games, according to Peterborough director of football Barry Fry, but they may be priced out of a move for the outstanding 20-year-old.
Those assertions appear to have been undermined by the chairman’s insistence that he will not be sold for top dollar. Because they are in English League One this season, MacAnthony stated on the Hard Truth Podcast that they will not be able to seek a large pay day. “I’m not asking for £6 million, £8 million, or £10 million for Ronnie Edwards,” he stated. Because we are a League One club, I am being realistic. I’d ask for more if we were in the Championship. I just want a reasonable charge with some great extras, and we’ll get it in January.”
While Edwards will have Rangers on high alert, the signing of Leeds United youngster Jamie Shackleton remains improbable. This season, the 23-year-old has impressed at Elland Road in the English Championship.
However, The Athletic add that once Shackleton returned from his loan spell at Millwall last summer, the Scottish Premiership club expressed an interest in him. However, it is noted that “that option did not develop” after “exploring” a contract.
Craig Moore, one of the prospects who arrived this summer, has come to Sam Lammers’ defense. The Dutchman has struggled to impress since joining from Atalanta, earning the wrath of Ibrox supporters after a costly miss against Celtic.
Moore told Go Radio that the star has had some beneficial effects: “Some Rangers fans might think I’m crazy, but I was at the game and everyone is talking about Lammers’ huge miss.” His eagerness to go on the ball and be involved in the game, even when he was taking stick… that’s what the Rangers need. That is exactly what the Rangers require right now.
“He’s taking abuse, but he still wants to get on the ball and be a part of the game, and that’s the type of player the Rangers need a lot more of.” They are about to enter a situation in which everyone is under pressure.
“I observe people all the time because I want to learn and discover more.” As I said, that’s the one thing that popped out, and it’s a quality I love because I know it’s needed at the club.”
