Tottenham are interested in Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino.
According to Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a transfer for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino as Ange Postecoglou tries to improve his midfield department.

According to the Spanish newspaper, the 27-year-old has a release clause in his contract for £52 million (€60 million), and Tottenham see an opportunity to purchase him at a reasonable price.

Postecoglou has been rebuilding the squad since his arrival in the summer, and he plans to do it again this winter as he looks for a new midfielder. Merino has emerged as a target as a result of his excellent performances for Sociedad.

Merino is recognized as one of the top midfielders in Spain, having been one of The White and Blues’ most consistent performers. He appeared in 199 games in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and registering 25 assists.

He was vital in Real Sociedad winning the Copa del Rey in the 2019/20 season.

Last season, the Spain international was named to the La Liga Team of the Season after Imanol Alguacil’s side finished fourth in the league table after an outstanding start to the season, ensuring Champions League participation.

Midfield bolstering
Postecoglou favors Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, and James Maddison as his midfield trio, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso have been linked with moves away from Spurs this summer.

Hojbjerg was close to joining Atletico Madrid but the move fell through after Diego Simeone’s side failed to agree a deal with the North Londoners. Tottenham also failed to secure a replacement. Postecoglou is already planning ahead to the next transfer window and Merino is on the club’s radar. The versatile midfielder has two years left on his contract with Sociedad, however, according to Fichajes, the La Liga side are desperate to renegotiate fresh terms.

Tottenham are trying to complete a transfer and get Merino to North London before Sociedad can persuade him to sign a new contract.
