Tottenham receives a boost in their pursuit of Chelsea player Nathaniel Chalobah.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have got a significant boost in their pursuit of Chelsea player Trevoh Chalobah, as the Blues may be obliged to sell the Englishman in January due to FFP requirements.

Spurs strengthened their defense after dealing with a leaky defense last season, paying £43 million to VfL Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven in the just closed transfer window.

However, it appeared like they planned to sign a second defender this summer. Several players were suggested as potential targets, including Edmond Tapsoba and Lloyd Kelly.

Tottenham reportedly initiated talks with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Tapsoba, while making a deadline day offer to sign Kelly. But, in the end, they were unable to reach an agreement on any of them.

Tottenham reportedly made a last-ditch bid to recruit Chalobah after failing to sign their top targets, but they were unable to seal a deal for him before the window closed.

Tottenham to sign Chalobah

Tottenham are rumored to be planning to recruit a new defender in January as they have realized they lack depth in that department, and they may rekindle their interest in signing the Chelsea star.

Chelsea are keen on selling Chalobah in January to comply with FFP laws after spending over £400m this summer, according to Football Insider. As a result, Spurs have a significant advantage in securing the Englishman’s signature.

However, the source adds that getting Chalobah will be difficult for Tottenham because Bayern Munich previously indicated interest in signing him because Thomas Tuchel is a great fan of the defender but were unable to gain his signature. The Bavarian club, on the other hand, may decide to renew their interest in January.

Chalobah is a versatile player who can play both center-back and right-back. He is swift, strong, good in the air, at ease playing out from the back, and contributes significantly on defense.

So, the 24-year-old possesses the essential attributes to play under Ange Postecoglou’s system, and he would be a wise signing for Tottenham if they choose to sign him.

However, it will be intriguing to watch whether Spurs decide to make a formal move for Chalobah, who is rated at roughly £16 million by Transfermarkt, in the upcoming transfer window.
