Norwich City striker Ashley Barnes could miss out on return to Plymouth Argyle
The 33-year-old former Pilgrims’ striker was substituted during Norwich’s 2-0 Championship home defeat by Leicester City last night due to a knee injury
Norwich City striker Ashley Barnes was having a scan today on what was feared to be a knee ligament injury ahead of the Canaries’ trip to play Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday.
The 33-year-old had to be taken off early in the second half of the Canaries’ 2-0 home Championship defeat by Leicester City at Carrow Road last night, when he was replaced by Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah. Barnes began his career in league football with Argyle after he was signed by then manager Ian Holloway from Paulton Rovers in 2007 and went on to play for them in the Championship.
He had a number of loan spells while with the Pilgrims but also made a total of 16 starts and nine substitute appearances before joining Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2010 for an undisclosed fee.
Norwich boss David Wagner said about Barnes after the game against Leicester: “It looks like a knee ligament injury. How serious? He will have a scan tomorrow and we will see.”
Barnes moved from Burnley to Norwich in the summer and his first goal for his new club, which came in a 4-0 win at Huddersfield Town last month, was also his 100th in league football. The first of those came in Argyle colours during a 4-0 Championship victory over Coventry City at Home Park in April 2009.
The now vastly-experienced striker has started all seven Championship games for Norwich this season and netted twice. The Canaries are already without United States international forward Josh Sargent until the new year due to an ankle injury he sustained against Huddersfield.
Norwich are fifth in the Championship table on 13 points following their defeat by Leicester. It came after they had beaten Stoke City 1-0 at Carrow Road last Saturday.
