ROY McCROHAN, A CITY LEGEND, PASSES AWAY

Roy McCrohan, a Canary Island icon, has died.

EVERYONE AT NORWICH CITY FOOTBALL CLUB was shocked to learn of the passing yesterday of Canary great and hall of fame member Roy McCrohan.

Roy, 84, died on Tuesday in a hospital in the West Country after a protracted illness.

Roy is sixth on the all-time list of Canary appearances, having played 426 games in 11 seasons of faithful service at Carrow Road from 1951 to 1962.

He played in a variety of positions for the Club during his seven-year tenure, missing only 11 first-team games. In addition to his colossal number of senior matches, Roy also appeared 101 times for City Reserves.

Roy was a constant during the club’s illustrious FA Cup run in 1958-59, playing with Barry Butler at centre-half in all bar the first game against Ilford, when he was moved to full-back.

Roy’s final game for Norwich City was the second leg of the League Cup Final against Rochdale in 1962, and his legendary Norwich City career ended with the team capturing a national trophy. In 2003, he was inducted into the Norwich City Hall of Fame.

His wife, Mary McCrohan, claimed her husband had fond memories of his time on the Canaries.

“Roy loved his time with Norwich and always spoke very fondly about the Club and the people there, the players and of course the supporters,” she told canaries.co.uk.

” He returned for reunions when he could. Norwich City Football Club was an important aspect of his life.”

The Club will formally pay tribute to Roy McCrohan at a future game. In this difficult time, our hearts go out to his wife Mary, daughter Sue, son Andy, and the rest of his family.
