Paul Madeley, a former Leeds player and England international, died at the age of 73.

Paul Madeley, a former Leeds United player and England international, died on Monday at the age of 73.

He is said to have been battling disease for a long time. Madeley has had Parkinson’s disease for nearly 15 years.

The Beeston native was an important member of Don Revie’s Leeds club that won the First Division in 1969 and 1974, as well as the FA Cup in 1972. During his six-year international career, he was also capped 24 times by England.

‘Everyone at Leeds is profoundly grieved to hear of the demise of Leeds great Paul Madeley,’ Leeds said on Monday evening. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.’

The Elland Road club will pay tribute by donning black armbands against Oxford United in a pre-season fixture on Tuesday evening. The opening Championship game of the season, against Stoke on August 5, will contain a tribute to Madeley.

‘Paul Madeley died away peacefully today in Leeds, surrounded by his family,’ said the Madeley family in a statement.

‘Paul was a much-loved husband, father, and brother, and the family is tremendously proud of his achievements in life and on the football field for Leeds United and England.
