‘The signing Leeds needed to make,’ says BBC commentator of Whites summer signing’s performance against Watford.
Calvin Andrew, a BBC Sport analyst, praised Leeds United attacker Joel Piroe for his performance against Watford.
The 24-year-old was signed by the Whites in late August for a cost rumoured to be in excess of £10 million.
Prior to Saturday’s Championship match at Elland Road, Piroe had three goals for Leeds.
He scored on his debut against Ipswich and also scored twice against Millwall.
Piroe opened the scoring for Leeds against the Hornets on Saturday, sliding in from a few yards away.
It was a much-needed goal for the Whites, who had been down following a succession of saves from Daniel Bachmann.
The floodgates then opened for Leeds, who went on to win for the first time in nine games at Elland Road.
Just minutes after Piroe’s goal, Sam Byram headed home to extend Leeds’ lead, and Jaidon Anthony added a third for the Whites near the end.
Earlier in the game, Georginio Rutter’s goal against the struggling Hornets was ruled out for offside.
Andrew, writing on Squad Goals on the BBC Sport website, praised Piroe’s performance.
“Joel Piroe was the signing Leeds needed to make,” he explained.
They needed to go out and find someone because they have so much talent to create opportunities, and they needed someone with a scoring eye to convert them.
“Joel Piroe is exactly that.”
Piroe has been an excellent purchase for Leeds thus far, which comes as no surprise given how effectively he performed for Swansea.
It’ll be interesting to see how he performs for Daniel Farke’s charges, who appear to be shifting gears as they try to climb the table.
Leeds are now sixth in the Championship, with 13 points from eight games.
