Gus Hamer’s progress after leaving Coventry City for Sheffield United.

The midfielder joined Bramall Lane in the summer.

Coventry City just lost out on promotion from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of the previous season.

The Sky Blues were denied a return to the top division of English football for the first time since the 2000/01 season after losing a penalty shootout against Luton Town in the play-off final at Wembley.

After missing out on promotion to the Premier League, the club struggled to retain the services of some of their key players during the summer transfer window.

Gustavo Hamer was one of those that left the club. In the summer of 2020, the midfielder joined Coventry from PEC Zwolle in his native Netherlands.

Over the next three seasons, Hamer went on to make 132 appearances in all competitions for Coventry, scoring 19 goals and winning the club’s Player of the Year award twice.

However, Hamer would leave the Sky Blues in the summer to join Sheffield United, one of the clubs promoted to the Premier League last season.

The Blades reportedly paid over £15 million to sign the 26-year-old, but how has he performed since then?

In order to discover out, we’ve taken a look at how things have gone for Hamer since he left Coventry for Sheffield United in the summer.

Gustavo Hamer is doing well at Sheffield United.

Hamer’s transfer was not finalised in time for him to play in their season-opening 1-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace.

However, under Paul Heckingbottom, the midfielder has swiftly established himself as a regular in the Sheffield United team.

The Dutchman has started all five Premier League games for the Blades in which he has been eligible, creating an impact.

Hamer has already scored twice for Sheffield United, netting a fantastic shot on debut against Nottingham Forest and another superb finish against Tottenham.

Indeed, he is the only player for Sheffield United to have scored more than once in the Premier League this season, which emphasizes the difficulty he faces at Bramall Lane.

It appears that Hamer and his new team will have a difficult season, as they have only gained one point from their first six league games of the season, leaving them bottom of the Premier League table.

What is Hamer’s next step at Sheffield United?

This Saturday, Hamer and his Sheffield United team will have another difficult test when they travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham.

Aside from that, the current Premier League table and recent form appear to indicate that Hamer will be involved in a relegation battle with Sheffield United this season.

However, in the summer, the midfielder signed a four-year contract with Sheffield United, ensuring his future at Bramall Lane until the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.

As a result, given the fantastic start he appears to have made from an individual standpoint, it appears Sheffield United fans can look forward to plenty more moments of brilliance from Hamer in the coming years.
