Luton’s full-backs are defeated by Luton Town. According to journalist , Ashley Young and Vitaliy Mykolenko will now feel “under pressure” following their performances in the 2-1 loss to Luton Town.

On Saturday [30 September], the Toffees were defeated at Goodison Park by Luton Town, who won their maiden Premier League game.
Following the home loss, a number of Everton players faced criticism, including defenders Young and Mykolenko for their roles in the visitors’ goals.

Beesley, writing in the Liverpool Echo on October 2nd, questioned if the pair would be retained in the team for the visit of Bournemouth the following weekend.

“Both full-backs Ashley Young and Vitalii Mykolenko could come under pressure after their displays against the Hatters,” he stated.

“Fingers will be pointed at Young for allowing Luton captain Tom Lockyer to open the scoring instead of clearing his lines, and Mykolenko for leaving Carlton Morris wide open at the back post for the second goal instead of keeping an eye on the centre-forward.”

“Nathan Patterson, who came on in the second half to replace Young, could come in at right-back, ensuring that the 38-year-old either reverts to the other side of defense, with [Ben] Godfrey also an option.”

Changes

Young was undoubtedly Everton’s poorest performer on an otherwise terrible afternoon.

In the build-up to Lockyer’s goal, the veteran full-back was too lengthy on the ball and also underperformed offensively.

Mykolenko’s return to the team corresponded with an improvement in results, however he was responsible for Luton Town’s winning goal.

Sean Dyche does not have a lot of depth in those places, but Patterson will almost certainly start against Bournemouth.

If Dyche wants to take more dramatic measures, Godfrey is another possibility to play out wide in defense.

This season, Everton’s attackers have been called into question, but the defense has also fallen short.

If the Luton performance is replicated next week, Dyche will have some serious questions to answer.

In other Everton news, Jack Harrison made a six-word concession following the defeat to Luton Town.
