Warrington Wolves injury report following Wigan Warriors defeat

Joe Philbin is “rattled” after suffering a concussion against Wigan Warriors on Friday night, according to DARYL Powell.

During the second half of Warrington Wolves’ 26-12 loss at the DW Stadium, the forward sustained a knock to the head while attempting to tackle Wigan’s Kai Pearce-Paul.

Play was delayed while Philbin was treated, and while he was eventually allowed to walk off the field, he failed his head injury evaluation.

This results in a statutory 11-day layoff, although given that Wire are currently 15 days away from their next game, a trip to Wakefield Trinity on July 30, Philbin is unlikely to miss any action.

“Joe failed his HIA – he’s got a bit of time but we need to go through the checks to make sure he’s alright,” Powell told reporters.

“He appeared shaken and will need to be checked over, but he’ll be fine.”

“There’s always checks and protocols in terms of coming back so we’ll see how he is.”

The two-week hiatus will also allow James Harrison to recover after sustaining an ankle injury late in the game.

Powell confirmed Harrison intended to finish the game but was withdrawn as a precaution.

Wire were once again without numerous key players, with George Williams missing a third game due to a hamstring injury.

Powell stated after the game that Williams was scheduled to face his former team this week but became ill during Thursday’s final training session, forcing Danny Walker to play out of position at stand-off.

Along with Matty Nicholson (finger) and Matty Ashton (calf), he is set to return against Wakefield.

“We thought George was going to be alright all week,” Powell went on to say.

“He trained all week but felt his hamstring tightening near the end of the last session.”

“Riley Dean is out on loan, and Leon Hayes is still out.” We’d trained with our units in place, and losing our outside backs would have forced us to transfer Ben Currie to center, throwing us all over the place.

“We decided to keep the units as consistent as possible.”

“It was late in the day, and to be honest, I thought Danny did a good job, but it is what it is.”

“To be honest, our half-back situation has been frustrating all year, but it should be resolved against Wakefield.” Then, maybe, we’ll have some consistency.”
