Seahawks Injuries: Carroll’s Latest on DK, O-Linemen, and More

The Seattle Seahawks won in Week 7, increasing their record to 4-2 on the season, but their roster is still heavily injured.

Is Seahawks QB Geno Smith’s performance concerning?

The most notable injury on Seattle’s current injury list is standout wide receiver DK Metcalf, who missed his first game in five NFL seasons on Sunday due to hip and rib ailments. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll addressed the Pro Bowler’s status on Monday, a day after the Hawks defeated the Cardinals 20-10 at Lumen Field.

“He’ll see what it feels like to move around on Wednesday with the trainers and all that, and we’ll just take it one step at a time,” Carroll told reporters.

Essentially, Metcalf’s status for next Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns remains uncertain.

“I expect him to go to great lengths to make himself available,” Carroll said of Metcalf. “If it can happen, it will happen.” He’s doing everything he can, he’s as tough and physical as they come, and he’ll put up with anything.”

During Monday’s Pete Carroll Show, the Seahawks coach discussed many more injured players. Let’s go over those upgrades in more depth.

• Veteran outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu missed the second half of Sunday’s triumph with a strained pectoral muscle and may be out for the season. Carroll didn’t have much to say Monday morning, but his comments suggested that Nwosu was unlikely to play in Week 8. Carroll’s typical Monday afternoon news conference turned out to be much worse when he had additional information to discuss. Read the full story at this link for more information.

During an appearance on The Pete Carroll Show, the coach commended second-year OLB Boye Mafe for his performance in Nwosu’s absence.

“Boye’s doing a great job, and we’re going to need him.” ‘Chenna’ got hurt in this game, I’m not sure, I don’t have the official results from the doctors yet, but those (other outside linebackers) are going to have to play more, we think, at least in the next week.”

• Rookie running back Zach Charbonnet was inactive against the Cardinals due to a hamstring injury, but he appears to be on track to return against the Browns. Carroll says he saw the UCLA product running at Seahawks headquarters on Monday morning.

“He’s on the run and working hard to get back.” He’ll have his chance this week. “We’ll see what happens,” Carroll concluded.

• Injuries have wreaked havoc on Seattle’s offensive line this season. What’s the most recent news? Carroll said he won’t know the status of tackle Abraham Lucas until Wednesday because of a knee injury suffered in Week 1. Evan Brown, a center/guard, could return in Week 8 after missing Sunday with a hip injury.

“Evan’s another guy who’s got chance. He’ll be limited and we’ll see if by the end of the week he’s feeling good enough to play,” Carroll said. “He wanted to play last week but we just couldn’t, he couldn’t do it. He’s very, very tough on himself and he’ll overcome whatever he’s dealing with as best as he can. … He’s a good ballplayer. We’ll see if he can come back to us.”

• Carroll mentioned a few other names in quick succession who the Seahawks are hoping to get back: rookie running back Kenny McIntosh (on IR with a knee injury), veteran offensive lineman Jason Peters (practice squad, quad issue), wide receiver Dee Eskridge (is now eligible to return from a six-game suspension but suffered a knee injury in preseason) and nose tackle Austin Faoliu.

“McIntosh will be close; he’s ready to go.” Jason Peters is all set to go. That excites us; let these guys compete if we chose to practice them. Eskridge returns this week and (may) have a chance if everything falls into place before Wednesday. So there are some really fantastic, positive things going on. Austin Faoliu has a chance to return. He only played one game in (training) camp before getting hurt, so we haven’t even seen him yet. We have some big plans, and just seeing guys return is a good boost for us.”
