Chase Young completes physical and becomes a 49ers official.

On Wednesday, defensive end Chase Young cleared his physical and became a formal member of the 49ers, the team announced.

Two weeks ago, the teams started talking, and before Tuesday’s deadline, a deal was agreed upon. In exchange for Young, the 49ers gave the Commanders their compensatory third-round draft pick in 2024.

In 2021, Young tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. To repair the injury, a complex surgery was performed that involved grafting Young’s left patellar tendon. In three games, he played just 115 snaps, missing the most of 2022.

Young played in just 12 games over the previous two seasons, recording 1.5 sacks, due to an injury sustained in 2021 and rehabilitation in 2022.

However, the 49ers were unafraid of Young’s health.

General Manager John Lynch stated on Wednesday that “there’s preliminary medical stuff where they send medical files and all that,” according to David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “But it sure looks like he’s been healthy based upon what he’s been doing on the field.”

Throughout the course of the Commanders’ seven games this season, Young played 407 snaps and recorded 15 tackles, five sacks, six tackles for loss, and one pass defensed.

“I kept turning on the tape and like, 75, 64, those are a lot of snaps,” Lynch said. “And so I think the proof is in what’s translating on the field, and he’s been playing a lot and looking really good.
