49ers are urged to replace Brock Purdy with the “most accurate” 2024 quarterback…
Should quarterback Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers continue to regress, selecting Michael Penix Jr. of Washington makes a lot of sense.
When the 2024 NFL draft rolls around, that’s what Tom Jensen of Sports Illustrated’s All 49ers envisions. The former Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 draft, Purdy, has struggled recently with six turnovers and a three-game losing streak, not living up to his early promising start. The most accurate college deep thrower in years, Michael Penix Jr., has a history of injuries, but if he falls, Jensen wrote, “[Kyle] Shanahan can draft Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.” “Penix pays off for eight in the box against a defense. The Niners might select a shutdown corner or a defensive end in the draft. Purdy’s chances of being a starter in the long run are diminished with any of those options.Throughout his 3,201 yards for 26 touchdowns against seven interceptions, Penix completes 69.4% of his passes. Despite his ability to make plays with his legs, he doesn’t rely on it because in his two seasons with the Huskies, he has only scored five rushing touchdowns and less than 100 yards rushing.
After a 5-0 start, San Francisco appears ready to select at No. 26 or lower, despite their current struggles. Jensen didn’t completely rule out Purdy becoming a franchise quarterback and the 49ers investing in him with that No. 26 pick—or wherever the Niners land—despite Purdy’s part in the recent struggles
Purdy has all the necessary skills to lead the team at quarterback. But in order to accomplish that, Jensen wrote, “he needs a balanced offense, and Shanahan needs to prioritize pass protection for the first time in over seven years.”
