West Brom is thrilled to learn of Josh Maja’s injury following Thomas-Asante’s performance against Southampton.
The recent announcement that Josh Maja is anticipated to make a comeback from injury following Brandon Thomas-Asante’s impressive performance against Southampton will excite West Brom.
Maja, who has been out of commission since September due to an ankle ligament injury, has started light training again, and Carlos Corberan has stated that he should be ready to go back after the international break [Birmingham Live, 9 November].
For much of this season, Thomas-Asante has been the only available striker. As a result of his lackluster performances, Corberan has frequently chosen to play with a false nine, so Maja’s return will be welcome news.
Thomas-Asante put on another lackluster performance up front in the 2-1 loss to Southampton on November 11, a game in which the majority of the Albion team performed admirably despite the outcome.
Despite playing the entire game, he only completed 13 passes, had fewer touches of the ball than Alex Palmer (28 versus Palmer’s 38), and only won three of his ten attempted duels (33%), not to mention his carelessness in front of goal.
Given their outstanding performance at St Mary’s, West Brom could have easily won all three points on a different day and with a different striker. But Thomas-Asante was a disappointment.
Although his shot that cannoned off the woodwork may have been unlucky, he was unable to give the Baggies the upfront play they needed, missing two good opportunities, only hitting the target once in four attempts, and losing the ball eight times.
Maja’s comeback has been long anticipated, and supporters may be more eager than ever for him to rejoin the team. While he regains his fitness, it might take some time before he can begin, but if he is available, it will be easier to be patient.
