defenders 2023 American League Platinum Glove Goes to Andrés Giménez
The best defensive player in the American League for the 2023 campaign is none other than Cleveland’s second baseman.

Andrés Giménez, a second baseman, and Steven Kwan, a left fielder, were the two American League Gold Glove Award winners for the Cleveland Guardians in 2023.

Giménez and Kwan received these honors in recognition of being the top defensive players in their respective positions in the American League.

Still, one of these two has been further recognized as the American League’s best defensive player overall.

The 25-year-old Giménez was declared the 2023 American League Platinum Glove Award winner late on Friday night.

Since MLB’s Rawlings Platinum Glove Awards began in 2011, Giménez is also only the second player from Cleveland to win the AL Platinum Glove Award. Francisco Lindor, a former shortstop for Cleveland, also took home the prize in 2016.

FanGraphs reports that Giménez led all MLB players in assists (401), all AL players in runs above average (15), and outs above average (18) in defensive runs saved overall.

Additionally, he was second in the AL in innings played (1,308.0) and second in putouts (259) among second basemen in MLB.

In addition to winning his first career Fielding Bible Award last month, Giménez has already won another defensive honor this season: the AL Platinum Glove Award.

The second baseman has become one of MLB’s premier defensive players over the past two seasons, as he also won an AL Gold Glove Award last year.

Fernando Tatís Jr., the right fielder for the San Diego Padres who won the National League Platinum Glove Award, joins Giménez as a 2023 Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winner.
