OL Gabe Smith, 2025, plans to enroll at Virginia Tech again in the spring

GA’s Alpharetta Harvard Gabe Smith, an offensive lineman in the class of 2025, went to Virginia Tech early in the autumn to experience a Blacksburg gameday. Regretfully, he happened to visit during one of the stormiest seasons Lane Stadium has experienced lately.

Smith recalled his first visit to Blacksburg as “the Purdue game with the bad rain delay,” but added, “I still enjoyed the area and meeting the coaches.”

During the 2023 recruiting cycle, Virginia Tech signed a total of 27 players, all of whom were already on the team when the 2023 season began. The Hokies are led by 26 true freshmen and one signee, James Jennette, a sophomore who attended William & Mary as a freshman after attending College of the Canyons (Junior College).

Eleven players from Virginia Tech’s 2023 class saw game action on Saturday afternoon against Boston College: cornerback Braylon Johnson, cornerback Dante Lovett, safety Mose Phillips III, wide receiver Ayden Greene, defensive lineman Jason Abbey, wide receiver Chance Fitzgerald, quarterback William “Pop” Watson III, running back Jeremiah Coney, and offensive lineman Layth Ghannam.

A player may participate in up to four games while still being eligible to redshirt under current NCAA rules. A player’s redshirt for 2023 is formally burned after they participate in five or more games.
