Comparing Chattanooga and Alabama statistically: Rising tide heading into Iron Bowl Kicker Will Reichard of Alabama holds the record for the most career points by a kicker with more points than any other player in major college football history. Reichard is behind quarterback Keenan Reynolds (530 points for Navy, 2012–2015) and running back Kenneth Dixon (522 points for TCU, 2012–2015) with 509 points.

This season, Chattanooga’s schedule includes games in Alabama. In their season opener on September 2, the Mocs fell 41-27 at North Alabama; on September 30, they triumphed 47-24 at Samford.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has scored touchdowns in each of the last two games. Nov. 4, Milroe ran for four touchdowns in a 42-28 victory over LSU; Nov. 11, he scored three touchdowns on the ground and three more passing.

Alabama played seasons as a part of the Southern Conference, Chattanooga’s home league since the Mocs joined in 1976. Following the departure of Southern Conference members residing west and south of the Appalachian Mountains to form the new conference, the SEC hosted its inaugural football season in 1933. Alabama joined Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, and North Carolina State as charter members of the Southern in 1921.

In order to create the league, Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Washington & Lee split from the thirty-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Prior to the SEC split, the Southern later added Duke, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Sewanee, South Carolina, Tulane, and Vanderbilt as members. Alabama finished undefeated in the league in 1924, 1925, and 1926 and won 20 games in a row in the Southern Conference. When seven Southern schools split off to form the ACC in 1953, the Southern gave rise to yet another major conference.

In 13 games versus Chattanooga, Alabama has won 13. More games than any other opponent have been played between Alabama and the Mocs without a loss or a tie. In the series, Chattanooga has been outscored 494–71 by the Crimson Tide. The last time the two teams faced off was in 2016, and Alabama came out on top 31-3.

Alabama has faced an NCAA FCS opponent on 15 of its previous schedules, which includes the 2023 slate. This season, Chattanooga will be the opponent. The one exception was in 2020, when the Crimson Tide’s regular season schedule was limited to SEC opponents due to the coronavirus pandemic. In Alabama’s matchup prior to the Iron Bowl, thirteen FCS teams were the opposition. Since the NCAA separated Division I football into the FCS in 1978, the Tide has an 18-0 record against FCS teams. Division I-A and Division I-AA.
