Unfortunately, despite playing four excellent periods this past week in Sweden, the Detroit Red Wings were only able to earn one of four possible points against their division rivals.
The Detroit Red Wings went to Stockholm, Sweden, to play in the NHL’s Global Series, in case you’ve been living under a rock. On Thursday, Detroit faced the Ottawa Senators, and on Friday, it faced the Toronto Maple Leafs. Needless to say, Derek Lalonde’s team’s plans did not work out. Following a 3-0 deficit to the
Senators in the first period and 4-0 overall, the Red Wings battled back to tie the game, but in overtime, they were defeated with two seconds left. In the final seconds, Tim Stützle sealed the victory by batting an airborne puck past goalie James Reimer. With his hand-eye coordination, he would have a spot on the Tigers if he could play shortstop.
The Red Wings would play fantastic hockey for two and a half periods against Toronto on Friday to make up for it. After leading by two goals going into the third quarter, Detroit destroyed Alex Lyon’s outstanding debut. Due to Ville Husso’s recent baby arrival and inability to travel to Sweden, Lyon was able to make his eagerly awaited Red Wings debut. Despite not being overly busy, he performed exceptionally well, needing to make 26 saves, some of which were excellent. With three goals in the third period, the Leafs stormed back to destroy the Wings. There was much to do.
dissect: Detroit’s poor play in the latter stages of games, along with a tendency to start slowly and occasionally not at all, is still a problem. The needle is trending lower for that reason as well as the fact that the majority of Detroit’s veteran defenders frequently appear to be completely lost in their own zone. Nevertheless, Patrick Kane, a free agent and potential Hall of Fame forward, is still connected to the Detroit Red Wings. Although Kane, 35, is still recovering from hip surgery that was done off-season, he should soon be able to play again. According to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.com, Kane and his agent, Pat Brisson, started holding meetings with teams last week. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Kane team intends to reduce that list by this weekend and may make a decision as early as next week.
With an 8-6-3 record as of right now, the Detroit Red Wings have 19 points for the season. Detroit is now in fourth place in the Atlantic Division, one point behind the Leafs but one point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who should see star goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy return from injury very soon.
I wonder how real these Kane-to-Detroit ties are, given that Detroit is 3-5-2 in their last ten games. It’s said that Kane chooses a location near his house. He resides in the Buffalo region. That means the Red Wings, Maple Leafs, and Sabres are all close by. Buffalo now has 15 points and is seventh in the Atlantic; two of those teams are on the rise, and Toronto is still a strong contender.
Before the Leafs have enough cash to sign Kane, they must resolve their cap concerns. The Sabres have $7.8 million in cap space, the Detroit Red Wings have roughly $4.4 million, and Toronto has a meager $60,000 left over. Kane will have to accept less money than both Detroit and Buffalo are willing to give him if he wants to have a serious shot at winning the Stanley Cup this year. He might prefer to sign with a younger, up-and-coming team like Buffalo or Detroit if he’s willing to sign a one-year contract with the hopes of signing a brief extension after he shows he’s healthy and back to his normal self (whatever that means at 35).
Bill Zito of the Florida Panthers is one of the more assertive general managers when it comes to Kane, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. This is intriguing because it’s obvious to anyone who isn’t majoring in geography that Sunrise, Florida, is far from Buffalo, where Kane lives.
Kane just finished a season with 92 points and 26 goals on a rebuilding Hawks team that received little support. He is coming off a 21-goal, 56-point season between the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers. Whatever your opinion of the man may be, he can support Alex DeBricant, Dylan Larkin, and Detroit’s power play.
