Des Kensel, the founding drummer of High on Fire, has announced his departure after 21 years.
“It is with great regret that I must announce that I will no longer be performing with High on Fire.”
The drummer for the Oakland metal band High on Fire, Des Kensel, posted on Instagram today, July 25, to announce his departure from the group. Kensel played with High on Fire for more than 20 years, having joined the group at its inception.
Kensel posted on Instagram, saying, “I am very thankful for what we have been able to accomplish as a band after eight albums, countless tours, and a Grammy win.” “It is time for me to announce that I will no longer be performing with High On Fire,” he said, after giving it some thought. Nightwish has announced the official leave of founding drummer Jukka Nevalainen, announcing his replacement in the process, while also promising a new album is on the horizon.
And the original percussionist for the Finnish symphonic metal band, who has taken time off due to chronic insomnia over the past few years, stated on Monday (July 15) that he will continue “to take care of the band’s businesses in the background” once he stands down totally from the drum throne.
Due to health concerns, Nevalainen initially stated in 2014 that he would not be participating in Nightwish’s eighth album or any of the band’s subsequent tours. As a result, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, the band’s first release without him, was released the following year. The artist has now made up his mind and formally unveiled the new drummer for Nightwish, who has been playing live with the group since that first announcement.
“It has now been five years since my difficult decision, due to severe insomnia, to step aside from the Vehicle of Spirit of Nightwish,” Nevalainen stated. This included the tours that followed the release of the preceding studio album. I’ve made the decision not to try my luck with joining the band again. I’ll be replaced as a full-time member by my good friend Kai Hahto.”
Hahto has shared the stage with acts like Wintersun, Swallow the Sun, and Rotten Sound in the past. Nightwish put out a greatest hits compilation called Decades last year.
