Wrexham are sitting in the final automatic promotion spot ahead of Wycombe Wanderers and are starting to dream of Championship football.

Phil Parkinson’s side are aiming for a record third successive promotion and despite Opta’s Wrexham supercomputer prediction, the Red Dragons are in pole position to move out of League One.

Wycombe have a tough run in on paper with the Chairboys still having to play six games against the top nine in the division but Wrexham will know there are no easy games at this stage of the season.

However, owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will already be making tentative plans for the Championship next season and recruitment will be vital if the club stand any chance of surviving the step up.

Wrexham need Premier League recruitment to survive the Championship
James McClean and Jay Rodriguez are among four players with Premier League experience in the current Wrexham squad and that will need to be added to should Parkinson’s side go up this season.

A player the club could target immediately is Steven Fletcher’s international team mate Tom Cairney, whose contract runs out in the summer at Fulham.

Wrexham could talk to Cairney right now about a potential deal however, as per Salary Sport, his £27k-a-week wages would need to be negotiated.

These are the sorts of deals that the Red Dragons need to be planning for should they make the jump to the Championship in order to not be left behind by their rivals.

Danny Ings is another option for Wrexham and the owners and recruitment team would be wise to consider some deals for Premier League proven stars to aid their next campaign.

What Tom Cairney would bring to Wrexham
The number ten role has been a problem for Parkinson all season following a dip in form from Elliot Lee and the injuries to the likes of Jack Marriott and Andy Cannon.

Wrexham are in desperate need of further quality on the ball from midfield and especially in the Championship, the club would struggle to dictate play and create chances without an improvement in quality in their squad.

Cairney is known for his composure on the ball and ability to play in tight spaces, he also has great intelligence and rarely picks the wrong pass.

At 34, he has found his opportunities diminishing this season for Fulham but has still found the back of the net once in his 19 Premier League appearances.

Should Wrexham achieve their goal of promotion to the Championship, Cairney would be the ideal player to slot into their midfield and would add experience and much-needed creativity at that level.

Wrexham have moved back into pole position to achieve automatic promotion this season after a gritty 1-0 win over Stockport County.

Phil Parkinson praised Sam Smith for his performance yet again with the striker working relentlessly up top but there was also a stand-out performance from Matty James in midfield.

Stockport boss Dave Challinor was unhappy with Wrexham’s penalty award after the ball struck defender Ibou Touray on the hand following a clash with James McClean.

However, the 1-0 win over Stockport moved Parkinson’s side three points clear of promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers and there is one incredible statistic that has proved the basis of Wrexham’s success this campaign.
