Frank Lampard insists Coventry City’s deflating 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United will not “define” his team’s season, with the head coach already turning his attention to a bounce-back display against Burnley.

The Sky Blues went into Friday night’s clash with the Blades brimming with confidence after putting fourth placed Sunderland to the sword. But they came out second best in the first of back-to-back fixtures against top three sides, beaten convincingly 3-1 at Bramall Lane.

Assessing the game which quickly turned in the home side’s favour following Gustavo Hamer’s stunning 19th minute top corner free-kick, Lampard said: “I think we started pretty well against a good team, moved it well and showed some confidence in how we want to play. We didn’t create too many chances but football can be won and lost in critical moments, and it was a quality free-kick and they were more clinical in our box than we were in theirs.

“They defended their box really well and we were less so at times with some details. The rest of the game I thought was pretty even in terms of the middle bit. We had a lot of possession but we were not as hurtful to them as they were to us.

“They attacked quickly, have good players and are strong and fast as they attack. We have our way of playing and we didn’t have the cutting edge at the top end of the pitch, and sometimes you have to credit the opposition, and that’s why they are top of the league so there’s some balance to be had from tonight.

“You can come here and lose in this league as many teams have and will. That won’t define our season but I am certainly not overly disappointed with big parts of the performance or the application and how we approached the game. But sometimes when you’re a little bit off it at both ends and they’re on it, of course you can suffer a result.”

Asked if it’s now important for his players to attempt to bounce back against Burnley next weekend, he said: “For sure, and that’s what I am already doing, to an extent. And part of that is reviewing the details of today, of course. We lost to Derby, which was a different game to this, and we reacted against Sunderland.

“To go on the run that we have been on means we have won a lot of games which is not the norm for a non-parachute team, if you want to call it that. That’s been great but you also have to add losing because you are not going to keep winning. So having an understanding of why we lost by analysing the details and being focused through the week into the Burnley game is absolutely key. We did it going into Sunderland, to be fair, so it’s very important that we do that again.”
