Worthing 1-2 Truro City: Luke Jephcott seals victory for Tinners in title six-pointer Worthing fell to second in the National League South table by losing 2-1 at home to Truro.
Worthing’s promotion hopes took a setback this afternoon when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium to title rivals Truro City in the Vanarama National League South.
Truro started the game strong when Will Dean put them 1-0 ahead after Worthing were unable to clear Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain’s long throw in the third minute.
Just one minute later, Jaze Kabia scored a second in what seemed to be a dream start for The Tinners, but this was ruled offside.
Worthing controlled the bulk of the first half after this as Temi Babalola used his powerful physical presence to cause problems for the Truro defense.
Truro goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe had a solid first half performance denying an array of chances; however, this came to an end when the former Wigan Athletic man brought down Babalola in a studs first challenge.
The Mackerel Men were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Danny Cashman.
Truro retook the lead in the 68th minute when Luke Jephcott was played in behind and fired home.
Worthing created several chances at the end of the second half, but Truro held on to take three points back to Cornwall.
The result leaves The Rebels in second place, dropping behind today’s opposition.
Meanwhile, Dorking Wanderers’ draw with St. Albans means Truro now lead the division by goal difference.
On how today’s result affects their National League aspirations, Stewart Yetton, Truro City assistant manager, said: “I think for us it just keeps us in the picture; if we’d have lost today that would have put us six points behind and probably put us out of the race.
“It keeps us alive, puts us level with Worthing, it gives us a good chance, but obviously, there’s five teams within three points, so it just puts us in with a shout.”
