Liam Delap transfer assurance given after Newcastle United struggle that wasn’t his fault
Newcastle United are one of many clubs linked with a move for Liam Delap
Saturday’s 3-0 win for Newcastle United confirmed the relegation of Ipswich Town with four games to spare and subsequently activated a £30m release clause in the contract of striker Liam Delap. The 22-year-old, who has hit 12 Premier League goals this term, is set to be at the centre of a huge transfer tug of war this summer as top flight clubs battle it out for a bargain.
Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Delap’s services following his breakout year at this level, with the player getting a chance to showcase his talents at St James’ Park in recent days. Through no fault of his own with Ipswich being reduced to 10-men, that wasn’t quite possible as Delap and his co-stars were restricted to just 22 per cent possession in the Tyneside clash.
Boss Kieran McKenna has insisted, however, the striker is ready to make the step up for a ‘top club’ as the youngster ponders his future in the south east. “I don’t know who it would be accepted by, because that’s not by myself or Ipswich,” McKenna replied, when asked about the £30m release clause.
“Liam’s focus is still here and finishing the season as strong as possible. As I’ve said before, I think there’s certainly a possibility that he’s an Ipswich player next year.
“I don’t think anything’s decided in anyone’s mind. But can Liam play for the biggest clubs in the country, the biggest clubs in the world? He certainly can. I fully believe that.
“He’s already shown the impact he can have at Premier League level in a team that have really been fighting for everything. I think he can have an outstanding impact at this level.”
Newcastle are expected to pursue an attacker who can offer regular competition to Alexander Isak as the Magpies return to fighting on four fronts next term. With Callum Wilson’s future up in the air, there could be space for a top quality attacker to push the Swede behind the scenes next season.
