City face competition over permanent Wright deal – reports..

Norwich City are reportedly set for competition from Championship rivals Preston North End over the permanent addition of midfielder Jacob Wright.

The teenager joined the Canaries on a loan deal with a buy option from Premier League champions Manchester City in January, and head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup confirmed they were keen to exercise the clause worth £2.3m plus add-ons.

Sunday reports from Alan Nixon suggest that Preston are ready to submit a rival offer for the teenage midfielder after being impressed at his start to life at Carrow Road.

Although, the report adds that a fee of £2m may be too rich for Paul Heckingbottom’s side – who would look to use part of the cash gained from their impressive run to the FA Cup quarter finals to finance any swoop.

City are set for talks with Manchester City and Wright over his long-term future at the end of the season.

“I think we definitely try to (sign him), but like everything else, when it goes down to contracts, it also the player who needs to be a part of this,” Thorup said last week. “He needs to probably reflect a little bit after the season and find out whether this is the best place for him to go on the next step in his career.

“You have to agree many parts to make sure that a deal can be done. But for us he will be a very good fit because he’s the type of player that we are really looking for, and it is also his personality which is just a good fit for us because he is a guy who spends a lot of hours on the training pitch.

“He is a guy who’s asking constantly for feedback and details for him to be aware of in the game. That’s what we want to build in terms of the culture.”

Wright’s performances have shown promise after a hectic start to life in Norfolk that saw him unexpectedly thrust into the starting line-up for last month’s defeat to Preston.

Since, the teenager has grown in stature and his performances have contained plenty of maturity.

Both Swansea and Derby County sought to strike January deals for Wright but the teenager was enticed to City due to Thorup’s style of play.
