Bayern Munich have confirmed that Eric Dier (31) will leave the club at the end of the season. The Englishman is expected to join AS Monaco.
Dier’s contract at Bayern Munich will expire at the end of the season. The Bavarian club have been engaged in attempts to extend his deal, however, the club’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, has confirmed that Dier will leave the club upon the expiry of his current deal.
“He informed us that he would not extend and that he would be leaving us,” said Freund in a press conference on Friday. Dier’s departure comes despite “good talks” between the club and the former Tottenham Hotspur player. The Englishman joined last summer on a free transfer after an initial six-month loan spell.
He will now be a free agent and, as initially reported by L’Équipe, he will join AS Monaco. The deal to bring him to the Principality has already been concluded, Fabrizio Romano added. He is set to join on a two-year deal with the option to extend for a further 12 months.
Christoph Freund says Bayern Munich had “good talks” with Eric Dier but defender still wanted to move on..
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund talked through what happened with Eric Dier and his upcoming move to AS Monaco.
“We held talks with Eric over a contract extension. He informed us that he won’t be renewing and will be leaving us. He’s a great guy, and we’ve had a great time together. He’s felt very comfortable here, in Munich and at the club. Hopefully, he’ll crown his time with us with his first title,” said Freund (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “(A two-year deal) was (an option). We had good talks with his agents. But we respect his decision.”
As for if Dier will hang around for the Club World Cup, Freund is not sure.

“We’ll speak to him internally then decide,” said Freund. “This was a challenging season for us when it comes to injuries in defense. Stani (Josip Stanišić) got injured, (Hiroki) Itō got injured, now Upa (Dayot Upamecano), Phonzy (Alphonso Davies), Rapha (Raphaël Guerreiro), Itō again. Despite that, we still conceded the fewest goals in the Bundesliga. Of course we always want to improve, that’s our aim. But the boys did a good job despite the injuries. We had talks with Eric and wanted to keep him. We are well equipped defensively quality and quantity wise. We have to see how the injury situation will develop with Hiroki. With Upa, we hope he’ll be back soon. We’ll analyze the situation well internally. Our big goal is not to have many injuries next season in the decisive phase.”
