Danny Rohl’s preferred destination revealed as Sheffield Wednesday manager backs himself into difficult situation…

It’s not much of a secret that Danny Rohl has plans to leave Sheffield Wednesday, but in an EFL Analysis exclusive we can reveal where he is likely to end up, and outline one surprising scenario that could still unfold.

In two seasons at Sheffield Wednesday, it’s safe to say Danny Rohl has done a great job, especially under the restrictive structure put in place by Dejphon Chansiri.

That miraculous survival last season has been followed up by a respectable 12th-placed finish in 2024/25, but the end-of-season celebrations are firmly on hold due to a number of issues in S6.

While there’s excitement about a potential Sheffield Wednesday takeover from the mega-rich Walton family, Rohl has engineered a ‘messy’ situation for himself, with fans unhappy at him openly suggesting he wants out.

The rumour mill will not stop turning when it comes to Rohl’s future, but EFL Analysis can shed some light on that with exclusive information about the young coach’s stance.

Danny Rohl more likely to make Germany move
Speaking to our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, we looked back at the idea that Rohl was on Southampton’s shortlist for a new manager not that long ago, but things may have changed there now, leaving Rohl with only one avenue to pursue.

Bailey said: “Danny Rohl was the favourite for the Southampton job, but I think his stock has dropped a little bit. Now, I think he’s looking to make his way back to Germany, from what I can gather. He’s got his people working on a few clubs out there, with a few options coming up.

“RB Leipzig are an option, and obviously the Bayer Leverkusen job is another. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go back to Germany.”

Meanwhile, Bailey suggested that, the longer this whole debacle continues, there is always the possibility that Rohl finds himself stuck at Sheffield Wednesday, whether he likes it or not.

He added: “The thing with Rohl is, what do the club have to do? Sheffield Wednesday are not going to sack him. So, if we’re still talking about him in six weeks’ time and he’s back for pre-season, it could play out that he stays, unless he decides to walk away.”

While many fans are unhappy with how he’s behaved of late, there’s no denying that Rohl staying would be a big positive for Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Still, if Rohl does go to Germany, at least fans would not have to deal with the pain of seeing him coaching in the Championship against them next season.

Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday career so far
Danny Rohl took over at Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, after that disastrous start to the season under Xisco Munoz. With the Owls looking fated for relegation, Rohl had 35 league games to save their skin.

He did just that, racking up 15 wins (including three on the bounce in the final games of the campaign) and as many losses, which was enough to keep Wednesday in the division.

Statistics Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday
Games 89
Wins 34
Draws 19
Losses 36
Win % 38.2
Points-per-game 1.36
The Sheffield Wednesday manager actually registered an inferior win rate this season (32.6% in 2024/25 versus 42.9% last season), with 15 wins from 46 matches, but a massive 18 draws also helped lift the Owls to that midtable finish.

Still, inconsistencies aside, the expansive and aggressive style of play Wednesday employ under Rohl, twinned with his tactical flexibility and impressive motivational qualities, has made him one of the most sought-after coaches in the game.

Many suspect that, given the right backing, Rohl could do amazing things elsewhere. Now we wait and see whether he gets the chance to prove that.
