The Frenchman only has another year to run on his contract and it’s suggested he won’t cost much to sign.

That’s handy for City as they negotiate a reduction to their budget in the Championship next term.

Central midfield could be an area where they need to strengthen too, with a few players potentially departing.

Boubakary Soumare is expected to be sold with just a year left on his deal, and the same could now be true of Harry Winks, especially with the former Tottenham man currently out of the frame.

Wilfred Ndidi could be targeted having been strongly linked to Monaco in the January window, while Sheffield United may take up an option to buy Hamza Choudhury.

That would leave Oliver Skipp as the only senior midfielder in the City squad, meaning a rebuild would be required.

That’s especially with the most promising youngsters in that position – Sammy Braybrooke and Henry Cartwright – not having been given a chance to stake a claim.
