Rashard Higgins: After defeating the Steelers, the Browns “Partied like it was 1999”
Rashard Higgins made the decision to end his career earlier this week. The seven-year veteran joined the Cleveland Browns on a one-day contract to end his career, but he wasn’t the only one. Christian Kirksey, a former third-round selection, also made the decision to retire with the team where he played linebacker for six years.
Higgins spoke about his time in Cleveland on the Browns radio network while he was visiting the facility. He talked about his two favorite memories, which you could probably guess. Initially, they ended a protracted losing streak with a victory over the New York Jets in Week 3. Second, it was their victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2020 postseason.
According to Higgins, the Browns went into Pittsburgh and “had a dog walk” with them after realizing what needed to be done. Cleveland jumped out to a 28-0 lead and won 48-37. Higgins claimed that the team was having a 1999-style party after the game.
“That moment, that joy in the changing area. We had an incredible time partying like it was 1999 again.”
Naturally, the Browns franchise joined the NFL again in 1999. It’s difficult to blame them for savoring the moment as the 2020 victory marked their first postseason triumph since rejoining the league. The Steelers, meanwhile, pretended that it made no difference because the Chiefs would “clap” them.
Although Cleveland held their own and lost 22–17 away to Kansas City, they managed to win the game. If Higgins had scored a touchdown late in the first half, they might have prevailed, but a disastrous turnover was caused by a missed helmet-to-helmet call.
Higgins played for the Browns his entire career, finishing with 137 receptions for 1,890 yards and 12 touchdowns. He reunited with Baker Mayfield in 2022 while playing for the Carolina Panthers. That year, Higgins made three appearances but received no receptions. It’s difficult to hold them back from savoring the moment. The Steelers, meanwhile, pretended that it made no difference because the Chiefs would “clap” them.
