Released Sheffield United player set to join Championship side Stoke City as Alex Neil wins race
Republic of Ireland defender Enda Stevens is set to join Stoke City after being released by Sheffield United
Stoke City have won the race to sign Enda Stevens, according to reports. The Republic of Ireland defender is a free agent following his release in the summer.
The 32-year-old was one of three senior players let go by Sheffield United last month following their promotion to the Premier League. The left wing-back had spent six seasons at Bramall Lane and been a big part of the furniture.
The former Aston Villa and Portsmouth man was a key player in the season United gained promotion to the top flight in 2019 and was then among the best wing-backs in the Premier League the following campaign when they secured a magnificent top-10 finish.
He has struggled with injuries in the last couple of seasons and played a limited role in the latest success, featuring just 12 times for Paul Heckingbottom.
But he has not been without a club for too long. According to reports, Stoke City have snapped him up after being told by manager Alex Neil he considers him to command a starting role in his plans for next season.
The Potters boss is planning on reshaping the team ahead of his first full season in charge after joining from Sunderland and Stevens is one of his early summer signings.
It’s a good signing for the Championship side, who have won the race after several Championship clubs were keen on his services. Sadly for Stevens, his time at Bramall Lane came to an end this summer after the club decided against renewing his contract.
He will bring a wealth of experience at that level and could prove an astute bit of business.
