Wide receiver Jayden Reed of the Green Bay Packers discusses his injury status ahead of the Buccaneers in Week 15.
Throughout the season, the Green Bay Packers have struggled with numerous serious injuries. Despite their modest record of 6-7, they hold the final spot in the NFC Playoff picture. With four games left, it’s becoming increasingly important for the NFC teams to win because they all have identical 6-7 records. But these games will also get harder and harder because of their injuries.
The Packers released their first injury report of the week along with projections for each player’s practice status on Wednesday despite not practicing. Jayden Reed, a rookie wide receiver, was one of the new names on this report.
After hitting his head on the ground during Monday night’s 24-22 loss to the New York Giants, Reed underwent a concussion evaluation. Until today, Green Bay had not released any information about his situation.
Reed is listed as having an ankle injury on the injury report, but thankfully did not sustain a concussion. Although the extent of the injury is unknown, Reed has stated that he will be available for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although Reed’s status as a limited participant on the injury report may raise concerns, it doesn’t appear that he is worried about his availability on Sunday. He assured Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated that he was alright and would be able to play against the Buccaneers:
This is certainly good news for Green Bay. Christian Watson was estimated to be a non-participant on the injury report as he continues to recover from an injured hamstring that he suffered late in the Packers’ win against the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, rookie wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks is dealing with a high ankle sprain and will likely miss some time.
Being down two wide receivers is bad enough. Green Bay will also be without starting tight end Luke Musgrave, who is recovering from a lacerated kidney. Aaron Jones remains week to week with a sprained MCL, though he was estimated as a limited participant on the injury report as well.
In the passing game this season, Reed has 48 receptions for 540 yards and five touchdowns. He leads the team in passing yards and is ranked second on the team in receptions (49, behind Romeo Doubs). Along with Watson’s five, he has tied for second place on the team with his five receiving touchdowns (Doubs has seven).
Reed only needs seven more receptions to equal the rookie pass-caught record set by the Packers. In 1988, Sterling Sharpe’s rookie season set the record at 55. Sharpe had 55 receptions for 791 yards and one touchdown in that season.
Watson had the best rookie wide receiver season in Aaron Rodgers’ tenure the previous year, hauling in 41 receptions for 611 yards and seven touchdowns.
In 1952, Billy Howton—who, despite retiring as the NFL’s all-time leading receiver, is somehow not in the Hall of Fame—had the best rookie season of any wide receiver in Packers history. He set a team record with 53 receptions for an NFL-high 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns.
