Championship relegation predictions as Luton Town and Derby County wins put Hull City in the mire
The chances of relegation from the Championship this season for the array of sides at the bottom end of the table has taken another twist.
This weekend saw the Championship relegation fight turned on its head, with Hull City now looking much more likely to feel the brunt of a drop to League One.
Going into matchday 45, Hull City required a win to make them mathematically safe, but Ruben Selles’ side fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to relegation rivals Derby County.
In the early kick-off, Luton Town squeezed the pressure on those sides above them as they beat Coventry City.
As for the sides who have been dragged back into the contest, relegation for Preston North End cannot be ruled out after they were defeated by Plymouth Argyle, who aren’t mathematically relegated, but will require an insurmountable 14-goal swing if they were to swap places with Luton.
With one game left of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, each side’s chances of relegation can now be revealed…
OPTA predicts likely Hull City relegation as Luton Town receive Championship lifeline
Following last weekend, it looked as though Luton Town would need nothing short of a miracle to keep their survival hopes intact, and that is exactly what has happened for them.
Their win was somewhat controversial, particularly surrounding the red card handed to Josh Da Silva, but their goal fell in the dying embers following a red card for Luton, with Liam Walsh receiving his third red card of the campaign.
That win puts the Hatters out of the relegation zone, with Hull City slotting in, a very precarious position for Selles’ side.
Because of this weekend’s action, here is what the OPTA Analyst predictions for relegation look like…
Ruben Selles knows what his Hull City side must do to cause a last-minute upset
Looking at the permutations for the final game of the 2024/25 Championship season in regards to relegation, a win will be enough for Hull City to clinch survival, regardless of results elsewhere, due to the fact that Derby County face Stoke, and the Tigers will either leapfrog one or both sides if they pick up all three points.
Also, a draw, depending on the results at Preston North End or Luton Town, as well as Derby’s clash with Stoke, could be enough as well, which surely gives some Tigers fans a mere grasp of hope, despite yesterday’s lethargic performance.
It is safe to say that this relegation fight is far from over, and whilst Hull City currently sit in the final relegation spot, there is no ruling out that it could all change on the final day.
