Four Nottingham Forest players with question marks over their futures ahead of key transfer window
Latest Nottingham Forest verdict as Nuno Espirito Santo’s Reds prepare for big summer transfer window
It is set up to be an exciting end to the season for Nottingham Forest as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side aim to wrap up proceedings in style.
The Reds are at Wembley this afternoon, taking on Manchester City for a place in the FA Cup final (4.30pm kick-off). Not only are they still in with a chance of securing silverware, they are also firmly in the mix to clinch Champions League qualification.
But whatever happens in the coming weeks, a big summer transfer window is on the cards at the City Ground. Incomings and outgoings are expected in order to shape Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for the 2025/26 campaign.
Last summer, the Portuguese placed a big emphasis on retaining the core of his group. It will be the same again this time around as Forest look to fend off any interest in their star men.
However, some players on the Reds’ books do have question marks against their futures Trentside. Below, NottinghamshireLive takes a look at the state of play on that front.
Taiwo Awoniyi
Adding a striker is an absolute must for Forest in the summer. Despite their best efforts, they have gone two windows without strengthening in that department and will not want to make it three in a row.
It remains to be seen what impact that would have on Awoniyi. It has been a difficult campaign for the Nigerian.
Missing a chunk of pre-season set him back initially, then minutes have proved hard to come by through a combination of being behind Chris Wood in the pecking order and injury problems. Not so long ago, it was suggested a return to former club Union Berlin could suit the front man.
Ola Aina
Interest in the Reds full-back only seems to be growing ahead of the summer. He has a long list of admirers thanks to his excellent season in the Garibaldi.
Liverpool are reportedly particularly keen as they prepare for the potential departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Chelsea, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Roma, AC Milan and Galatasaray have also been credited with an interest in the defender.
Aina’s current Forest contract is due to expire in June. The Reds have a 12-month extension option in their favour, but discussions have taken place regarding longer terms. The sooner the club get his situation sorted, the better.
Alex Moreno
After the Aston Villa loanee struggled in the 1-0 defeat to Everton, Nuno turned to Harry Toffolo at left-back for Monday night’s win over Tottenham Hotspur. Was that decision also an insight into the Portuguese’s longer-term stance over Moreno?
Forest hold an option to make his move a permanent one, and not so long ago that seemed like it would represent sensible business. After all, he started the campaign well enough.
However, Moreno’s form has dipped since and he has been linked with a return to former club Real Betis. Meanwhile, the Reds have been credited with interest in several left-backs.
