Matthew Knies Leaves Practice Hurt by Injury for Maple Leafs
The Original Six club of the Toronto Maple Leafs practiced today, January 10, in anticipation of their next game on January 11, which is against the New York Islanders. Regretfully, some unfavorable news has now eclipsed their team practice.
Due to a lower-body injury, rookie Matthew Knies of the Maple Leafs had to leave the team’s practice early. The 21-year-old winger required assistance from his teammates to get off the ice. Additionally, he was unable to bear any weight on his leg. Knies has not released an injury update as of the time this article was written. It is hard not to worry about the young forward, though, considering how he exited the ice.
Knies has been playing on the team’s first line alongside superstar center Auston Matthews and star winger Mitch Marner, so this is unfortunate timing for him as well. In the Maple Leafs’ most recent game against the San Jose Sharks, he also recorded an assist to snap a five-game pointless streak.
This season, Knies is playing well in his first full season with the Maple Leafs. He now has eight goals, fifteen points, and a plus-6 rating in 36 games this season. He has generally produced a strong offensive output for the team this season. As a result, his all-around game is getting better, and the Maple Leafs will definitely miss him if this injury keeps him sidelined for some time.
In the event that Knies is unable to play in the Maple Leafs’ upcoming game on January 11 against the New York Islanders, a player such as Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, or Nick Robertson may be promoted to the first line.
Still, this is undoubtedly some alarming and disturbing news regarding Knies. Hopefully, his injury won’t be too serious and he won’t have to miss a lot of time.
