One NFL coaching spot remains, but Mike Vrabel, the former coach of the Titans, appears to be the odd man out.
NASHVILLE — Former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel may not make the team in the 2024 NFL hiring cycle. Vrabel had at least Titanotw interviews, but the teams decided not to pursue him. The coaching position with the Washington Commanders is still open, but Vrabel was not one of the initial candidates to be interviewed.
Despite two straight losing seasons, most observers assumed that Vrabel, the former NFL Coach of the Year, would have no trouble finding a new coaching position when Amy Adams Strunk announced his firing on January 9.
Mike Macdonald, the 36-year-old defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, was hired by the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, making him the youngest coach in the NFL. For a fortnight, Jerod Mayo of the New England Patriots was the youngest head coach in the National Football League. Following the team’s split from Bill Belichick, Mayo was hired.
There were some rumors that the Pats might rehire their former linebacker from the Super Bowl, Vrabel, as coach. However, that was never going to happen. There was a succession clause in Mayo’s contract in case Belichick left.
After interviewing with Vrabel, the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers selected defensive coordinators Raheem Morris from the Rams and Dave Canales from the Bucs. The Los Angeles Chargers conducted interviews with Vrabel as well. If the team decided not to hire Jim Harbaugh, the NCAA national champion and former Michigan coach, Vrabel was the next best option, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Vrabel led the Titans to three straight postseason appearances in six seasons, including an AFC Championship Game defeat to eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City.
After two losing seasons, which included a 6-18 record in his final 24 games, Vrabel was fired and Brian Callahan was brought in. Vrabel may decide to forego the 2024 season in favor of a career in broadcasting. He might work as an analyst for a college football coaching staff if he decides to stay in football, presuming he wants to accept a position as defensive coordinator.
