Everton have just missed out on a ‘magnificent’ potential signing, he loves the club – opinion
Everton have now missed out on signing former player Joel Robles this summer with the Blues in need of a new backup goalkeeper to Jordan Pickford.
The ‘magnificent’ stopper confirmed via his Twitter account that he has now left Leeds United and was therefore available on a free transfer this summer.
However, the Toffees missed the opportunity to resign the Spanish keeper, who has become the latest European talent to move to Saudi Arabia, signing for Al-Qadsiah.
Everton had offered backup keeper Asmir Begovic a renewed contract earlier this summer, but the Bosnian international left the club once his contract expired and has since joined QPR.
Consequently, Sean Dyche’s side handed third choice Andy Lonergan a one-year extension, though Everton could still use another pair of gloves within the squad.
Joel Robles return to Everton would have been decent signing, but slow Everton lose out again
Robles spent five years at Goodison Park, joining from Wigan Athletic in 2013 for an undisclosed fee, before joining Real Betis in 2018.
The Spaniard was a very solid second choice to Tim Howard during his time at Everton and left a heartfelt message on his Twitter account following his 2018 departure exemplifying how much he loved his time at the club.
Indeed, Everton may be looking to exploit the market for free transfers this summer and resigning such an experienced player who loves the club could have been a shrewd move.
The 33-year-old has Premier League experience with Wigan Athletic, Everton and Leeds United and knows the Toffees from his previous years at the club.
The former Betis man could have offered a solid backup to Everton stopper Jordan Pickford, a position very much vacant following Begovic’s departure.
However, Everton have now missed the chance to sign the former Toffee and must continue their search for a second choice stopper.
