The Price is Too High | West Ham Unwilling to Budge on Striker Value..
West Ham have informed Claret & Hugh that they are still assessing Evan Ferguson and have not yet made a decision on whether to sign the player from Brighton.
The 20-year-old Irishman has seen little to no game time since joining the club in January, which is believed to have upset The Seagulls.
But reports that West Ham have made up their mind not to follow up interest in Ferguson have been refuted by the club when speaking to C&H this morning.
“It’s too early to say,” claimed a top source at the London Stadium, who continued: “We are still assessing him and he could still play a part this season.”
In reality, Ferguson is going to find it hard to get into the team now that Niclas Füllkrug has regained some degree of fitness. The German striker looked exceptional in his 40 minutes against Bournemouth, scoring a goal and generally making a nuisance of himself.
Ferguson’s main hope seems to rest with Hammers boss Graham Potter sticking with a system in which Lucas Paquetá and Jarrod Bowen can both be providers. Perhaps if the Brighton loanee and Füllkrug can share striker responsibilities, there might be a chance to shine. It would certainly be fair to say that Ferguson has not had a fair chance to prove himself during limited game time in East London.
However, any chance that West Ham will pay anything close to Hove Albion’s £50m transfer valuation is fanciful. The south coast club would have to drastically reduce their asking price for any deal to be considered.
Brighton ready for triple transfer decision this summer after West Ham Leicester and Ipswich deals..
Brighton and Hove Albion will have three big transfer decisions to make this summer.
The Seagulls have a number of bright young talents on loan across the European leagues – and also three in the Premier League.
Facundo Buonanotte left the south coast last summer for a season with Leicester City, while Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso went in search of regular football at West Ham United and Ipswich Town respectively last January.
All three are set to return to Brighton when the season ends but all three will be uncertain of their long-term futures. Here’s what we know so far:
Evan Ferguson: Much was expected from the Ireland international striker this season but it’s proved a frustrating campaign. Ferguson struggled to force his way in Hurzeler’s thinking and was behind Danny Welbeck, Georginio Rutter and Joao Pedro in the pecking order.
The 20-year-old was then hit with an ankle injury before securing a loan to West Ham, where he reunited with ex-Albion boss Graham Potter. Ferguson is yet to score from six appearances at West Ham and has so far struggled to make an impact in the second half of the season. Fans have criticised the Brighton man and Potter has been forced to defend his performances in press conferences.
He is contracted with Brighton until June 2029 and will hope to impress when he returns in pre-season. Welbeck and Rutter will likely be at Albion next term and much will depend on Pedro. If Brighton receive a huge offer for the Brazilian and decide to sell, that could open the door for Ferguson. The Seagulls have though already spent £22m on young Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas, who arrives this summer.
