Wrexham will be dreading final run-in as supercomputer changes its mind on League One promotion hopes..

In complete contrast to last weekend, Wrexham saw their promotion hopes take a big blow this time as they dropped points away at Wigan Athletic.

Just a week ago, Wrexham had extended their lead in second place to six points over Wycombe Wanderers, with a 3-0 win against Burton for the Red Dragons coinciding with a 1-0 defeat against Reading for the Chairboys.

However, a win in midweek for Wycombe with their game in hand closed the gap to three points. And, with both sides in action on Saturday lunchtime, the League One promotion race was altered once more.

Wrexham were warned of Wigan’s threat, and paid the price for a lack of prolificacy up top with a 0-0 draw against the Latics.

Wycombe got the job done against Stevenage, though they left it late to seal a 1-0 win, and now, the gap stands at just one point with four games to go.

As per the data-driven prediction, Wrexham should still clinch that all-important second spot behind champions Birmingham City, but they will do so by just one point.

Wrexham’s promotion chances have dropped dramatically, from 75.80% last week, to now standing at 55.72% as of yesterday’s results. Wycombe’s have jumped from 18.42% to 37.30%, so while the Red Dragons are still favourites, it’s a lot tighter than they would like now.

Wycombe Wanderers will be full of confidence now
Wigan boss Ryan Lowe believes Wrexham have the advantage in the promotion race, and mathematically they still do, of course.

But, after that two-point swing this weekend, and with Wycombe gaining significant momentum over the last week, the Chairboys will surely fancy themselves to spring a surprise and usurp Wrexham.

Mike Dodds said he and the Wycombe players are ‘galvanised’ after people wrote them off in the wake of that Reading defeat.

Date Wrexham Wycombe
Friday April 15 Bristol Rovers (H) Bolton (A)
Monday April 21 Blackpool (A) Charlton (H)
Saturday April 26 Charlton (H) Leyton Orient (A)
Saturday May 3 Lincoln (A) Stockport (H)

It will be a nail-biting race whichever way it goes, and Wrexham must now get back on track at home to Bristol Rovers on Friday afternoon. With Wycombe up against play-off hopefuls Bolton, Phil Parkinson will be hoping his rivals can slip up and hand the advantage back to the Red Dragons at the perfect time.

After that, Wycombe’s run-in doesn’t get any easier, with Charlton, Leyton Orient, and Stockport still to come. On paper, it’s still Wrexham’s to lose, but as we know, football is not played on paper.
