Leeds United loanee wins Player of the Month award as club hint at Elland Road fans hijacking their vote

Leeds United have waved goodbye to nine players on loan during the 2024-25 campaign already and this week, one of those has been named his club’s Player of the Month.

Many left the club in the summer. Eight players sold, many more on free transfers and five first-team stars on loan as Daniel Farke looked to rid his squad of the dead wood, but was also forced into some sales.

Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray moved to the Premier League. Marc Roca and Diego Llorente to Real Betis, while Charlie Cresswell and Glen Kamara moved to Ligue 1 sides in France.

Jack Harrison, Rasmus Kristensen, Sam Greenwood, Darryl Ombang, Sonny Perkins and Darko Gyabi were sent on loan and have since been joined by three more Under-21 Leeds stars including Cian Coleman.

Luca Thomas scored on his York City debut after going there on loan last month, while Joe Richards has moved to South Shields. Coleman is also making some serious inroads after joining Buxton temporarily.

The 20-year-old has scored a goal and laid on two assists in his four National League South appearances for Buxton. His form has been so good, that Coleman has won Buxton’s Player of the Month award.

However, Buxton have hinted in their post on Instagram that Leeds fans have jumped on the social media vote to help Coleman win the award. Coleman will play on Tuesday night, when Buxton face Scarborough.

Their caption read: “𝗢𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗠. Wow! 538 votes cast on X, thanks to plenty of interest from our West Yorkshire Supporters’ Club it seems. Our winner, though, by under 20 votes, it’s 𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗡!.”

It is make or break time for Cian Coleman and his Leeds future

Coleman has always been a regular for Leeds at U18 and U21 level. Able to play in a number of positions and has Ireland U21 caps to his name, Coleman seemed to have a good chance of making a senior debut.

But this loan at Buxton is make or break. The versatile midfielder is out of contract at Leeds at the end of the season, and he needs to impress if he is to stand any chance of signing a new deal at Elland Road.

Realistically, even a good loan in the sixth tier is not going to convince those at Elland Road. The chances are that Coleman is playing for his future, in that he is attempting to place himself in the shop window.
