David Givney, the fired doctor for the Cronulla Sharks, is devastated after 28 years of service.
HAVING been told he was no longer needed after 28 years of dedicated service to Cronulla, Dr David Givney could only lament his loss.
“When you’re old you’ve only got your integrity and today they’ve taken that away from me,” he said last night.
Givney was speaking from a sombre meeting with suspended head coach Shane Flanagan, who gathered the quartet of dismissed employees at his Barden Ridge house. The five were told of their fate about 5pm yesterday by Sharks director Peter Kerr.
“I’m just very sad,” Givney said. “In fact, I’m beyond sad. In my 28 years at the club I never had a contract.
“I just used to do handshake deals with (club great and former CEO) Steve Rogers and go again the next year. He would be rolling in his grave over this.”The club refused to give any reason for the dismissal because he was not a full-time employee.
At last night’s media conference, Dr Tricia Kavanagh, who recommended the sackings after her investigation, was grilled about Givney’s role.
