Collingwood Star Jordan De Goey Takes Personal Leave After Apologizing for Bali Incident
Collingwood Football Club has announced that star player Jordan De Goey has been granted personal leave and will not participate in the upcoming match against GWS. This decision comes shortly after De Goey was fined $25,000, suspended pending good behavior, and publicly apologized for his recent conduct while partying in Bali.
The club issued a statement confirming that De Goey has been absent from training this week and emphasized their support for him as he takes this time away from the game. The player had previously received permission to travel to Bali during the mid-season break.
Footage circulating on social media depicted De Goey making inappropriate gestures at a nightclub, which led to widespread criticism. In his apology, he acknowledged that his actions were “disrespectful” and expressed remorse for betraying the trust the club had placed in him. “I understand that I have let many people down,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to rebuilding that trust.
In light of the incident, De Goey will also participate in additional behavioral education alongside an existing counseling program. As a result of these events, contract negotiations with the 26-year-old, who is entering free agency, have been paused until the end of the season.
Collingwood CEO Mark Anderson condemned De Goey’s actions, particularly for their disrespect towards women, and reiterated the need for athletes to set a positive example. While the AFL has stated that the club has managed the situation appropriately and will not impose further sanctions, they also criticized De Goey’s behavior.
De Goey’s journey has been tumultuous; he previously faced disciplinary actions, including being stood down in October 2021 following an incident in New York. As he navigates this latest challenge, the Collingwood community and fans await his return to the field.
