Holmes Shouldn’t ‘Go Overboard’ on Goff’s Extension, Say All Lions
Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, is due for an extension, and the specifics of that new deal are a hot topic of discussion this offseason.
Teams are starting to create strategies for retaining their talent in advance of the 2024 season now that the Super Bowl has passed.
In a recent episode of ESPN’s “This Is Football,” host Kevin Clark had a conversation with former NFL general manager Thomas Dimitroff about several intriguing personnel issues involving the league.
That was Goff’s extension among them. Although Dimitroff supported the Lions giving the passer more time, he thinks the team shouldn’t pay too much to keep him.
“Look, I believe that Jared Goff has done a great deal for Brad Holmes’ organization. Well done, he threw a lot of darts early on,” Dimitroff remarked. “When I see him, I can’t help but feel that there must be market value between us. You have to be careful about how far you go there because I don’t think you can be held to. You could say, “Look, we want you here and here’s our number,” while meeting Jared’s gaze and the agent’s. You don’t seem to go too far in my opinion.
“It’s not as though he’s at the height of his abilities,” Dimitroff went on. “What he’s accomplished has truly impressed me. I must raise my hand; that was not what I expected. However, when you discuss that and then draw comparisons to your current situation with Jordan Love—that is, is Jordan Love deserving of $55 million annually? Is that the direction we want to take him? Whoa. I like what he’s doing, but what if, when he returns the following year, something goes wrong and he’s not who we thought he was?
J.J. Watt, a five-time NFL All-Pro defensive end, told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that Aidan Hutchinson, a defensive end for the Lions, can challenge for the title of league leader in sacks in the future.
Julian Okwara, a former outside linebacker for the Lions, was officially announced as a new member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 33rd Team podcast, hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown, recently released its most recent installment. Amon-Ra talked about his experience at the Pro Bowl and his thoughts on the Super Bowl.
In his evaluation of the 2023 NFL season, Gilbert Manzano of Sports Illustrated selected the Lions as the winners.
The Lions’ social media team on Wednesday released a set of cards with football themes in honor of Valentine’s Day.
