Crystal Palace striker sold in 2020 scores again, giving him 35 goals since leaving Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace have a history of poor striker signings, with the likes of Alexander Sorloth struggling at Selhurst Park.
Since Glenn Murray’s 31-goal haul in the 2012/13 season, the Eagles have been without a really prolific superstar, and while Christian Benteke appeared to buck the trend with 15 goals in the 2016/17 Premier League season, the Belgian rapidly faded.
In an unexpected turn of events, the aforementioned Alexander Sorloth is now shining away from Crystal Palace…
What is the backstory?
Dougie Freedman definitely spotted something special in the Norway international when he convinced Steve Parish to pay FC Midtjylland £9 million for his services in January 2018.
Sorloth struggled in south London, netting only one goal in 20 appearances before being moved to RB Leipzig in a £20 million deal in September 2020, following an excellent loan spell at Trabzonspor.
Since leaving Crystal Palace on a permanent basis in September 2020, the 27-year-old has amassed a goal tally of 35 for RB Leipzig, Real Sociedad, and now Villarreal.
Alexander Sorloth impresses after leaving Crystal Palace
Sorloth struggled at RB Leipzig, scoring only six goals in 38 games, but he has blossomed in Spanish football.
During a two-year loan spell at Real Sociedad, the Trondheim-born striker scored 24 goals in 90 appearances, convincing Villarreal to purchase him back in July.
Sorloth has five goals in ten appearances for the Yellow Submarine, including a strike against Barcelona and the winner in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League triumph over Rennes.
35 goals in all competitions – for three separate clubs – since leaving Crystal Palace in September 2020 is a solid return for a striker who, to say the least, many questioned during his time in SE25.
