The Lions will not’force feed’ Jahmyr Gibbs.
Dan Campbell addresses the role of Jahmyr Gibbs in the offense.
After four games, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has steadily adjusted to his job as the Lions’ No. 2 back behind David Montgomery.
Detroit’s No. 12 overall pick has 39 carries for 179 yards in four games. Gibbs has an additional 14 receptions for 70 yards in the passing game.
Many people are wondering why the Lions haven’t used the former Crimson Tide running back more often, in what looks to be a push driven by fantasy football pundits.
Head coach Dan Campbell was asked if Gibbs needed to make any changes to fully realize his receiving ability.
“I just want to reiterate, man, every player in this League grows at a different rate.” “And Gibbs is only going to get better and better as time goes on,” Campbell remarked. And look at him, he’s making the correct choices. And there were a couple of things that happened with that turf out there that slowed him down a little, and you’d want to believe that with him in space, he was going to produce something and didn’t quite get it going. He will, however. We’re not in a panic here. We’ll keep trying to get him the ball.”
With David Montgomery as the undisputed No. 1, the Lions had the option of not rushing a young player, despite rumors that the organization made a mistake in selecting him in the first round.
“Certainly having (David Montgomery) D-Mo allows us the ability to use both of them and use him a certain way, so we’re going to keep looking for targets, but look, we’re not going to try to force feed him,” he added. “We have enough people to feed the ball and keep us moving and efficient.” So this kid is going to be fine. We’ll just keep going here since he’s clever, works hard, and has versatility.”
