Strengths/Pros:
Briningstool is an incredibly natural pass catcher who plays with a high level of savvy. He’s smooth out of his release, gaining ground well and driving into his routes. His early footwork is sharp, moving quickly and especially shining through lateral releases. He flips his hips fluidly when working back to the quarterback, making himself open and available. He avoids physicality well through his routes, using twitchy compact movements to maintain his momentum.

On quick hitters, he gets to his spot without much wasted movement and showcases advanced spatial awareness at the catch point. Briningstool transitions through catches seamlessly, drifting forward to gain extra yardage and swiftly working downfield. He’s an aggressive fighter at the end of plays, always working to squeeze out more yards. He has a decent impact physicality as a pull blocker and is lengthy enough to engage defenders from a distance. His hands and base are quick at the attack point, allowing him to better contain faster defenders.

Weaknesses/Cons:
The overall blocking aspect of his game is the biggest area he needs to work on. He’s too lanky to generate impressive force as an impact blocker and gets pushed backward much more often than he drives defenders. Briningstool has too many lapses in lead blocking when trying to break down instead of continuing to work through lanes. His sub-250 pound weight at his size comes with a much weaker base than most, not giving him much to sink into.

Jake Briningstool Scouting Report

Briningstool’s top half gets too rotational too quickly when blocking, moving around without the leg strength to work through. As a route runner, he tends to look somewhat uncomfortable in traffic, especially over the middle. His feet get jumbled too often when planting through his route stems. It prevents him from accelerating through his cuts and limits his explosiveness. His biggest issue after the catch is not committing to straight-lining enough. He needs to kick it into high gear more often to maximize his yardage.

Potential Team Fits:
New York Jets
Denver Broncos
New England Patriots
NFL Projection:
Briningstool’s weight makes him more of an H-Back prospect than a true TE, making his projection uncertain. He likely won’t become a starter because of his hefty blocking issues, but he absolutely has the receiving prowess to find himself a role. Pass-heavy offenses will likely covet his smooth transitions as a pass catcher and potentially target him as a Day 3 pick with a higher upside in their schemes. His ceiling is probably that of a decent TE2, and the increasing emphasis on explosive pass plays should provide him with decent opportunities to make an impact.
