Dozens of people gathered in Chelmsford and Southend for ‘National Strike’ protests.
Dozens of anti-government protesters gathered in cities across Essex as part of a set of ‘National Strike’ demonstrations. People met in Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend-on-Sea on Saturday (May 24) to protest against the Labour government.
Protests began from noon and saw people gather outside Shire Hall in Chelmsford, the town hall in Colchester and the Victoria Shopping Centre in Southend-on-Sea. A counter-protest group also attended the event in Southend.
Officers from Essex Police attended, but the protests appeared to go without any trouble. Photos and videos shared from protests in Chelmsford and Southend appeared to show a small number of people attending.
A video from Southend showed a group of people with Union Flags outside the Victoria Shopping Centre, some of them chanted ‘Starmer Out’. Opposite them was a smaller group of people, some of whom carried placards that said: “Refugees welcome. Stop the far right.”
In Chelmsford, a gathering of people stood at the steps of Shire Hall. Some people also carried Union Flags.
On a fundraising page, National Strike said it opposes illegal immigration, grooming gangs, two-tier justice, and Britain’s involvement in the Ukraine war. The events in Essex coincided with similar protests in cities nationally.
In March, a YouGov poll found 48 per cent of people feel the UK government under Sir Keir Starmer is handling the current issues around the war in Ukraine well. Chelmsford has a Liberal Democrat-elected MP and Southend is represented by two Labour MPs.
